Favorite Movies of the Year 2021

This year was a milestone as in July I was able to go back to weekly sojourns to the cinema for the first time since March of 2020. It also marked a lot of disappointment at the blockbusters we waited so long to see. I don't remember the last time my long list of titles that I update throughout the year has been so short. There are also going to be a lot of titles that you may see and think, "wasn't that technically a 2020 release?" The answer is, yes, but I live in a place that isn't a top theater chain market, so more often than not, I don't get to see end of the year releases until well into February. Though, the year is also not over and I will be adding to the list up until 12/31 just like I did last year, but like last year, my top 15 films are very solid at this point and I feel confident releasing that list as well as the long list. Here are my favorites.

Long List:

Belfast

Everybody's Talking About Jamie

The Father

The Harder They Fall

La Llorona (there are many films with this title, I'm writing of the film from Guatemala directed by Jayro Bustamante)

Luca

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things

Mass

The Mitchells vs. the Machines

Nomadland

The Paper Tigers

Passing

Plan B

The Power of the Dog

Promising Young Woman

A Quiet Place: Part 2

Raya and the Last Dragon

Saint Maud

Summer of Soul

tick, tick... Boom
